Gardener Hackbridge Health & Safety Policy

This Health and Safety policy outlines the commitment of Gardener Hackbridge to provide safe and healthy working conditions for all staff, clients, visitors and members of the public in the areas we serve. Our goal is to deliver professional gardening and landscape maintenance with a clear focus on risk reduction, legal compliance and continuous improvement. This document sets out responsibilities, safe working practices, training expectations and monitoring arrangements for the gardening company and its workforce.

All employees and subcontractors are required to follow this policy and the associated safe systems of work. The management team will ensure that adequate resources are provided for health and safety, including appropriate equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and supervision. Regular risk assessments will be undertaken for each site and service type to identify hazards such as machinery operation, chemical use, manual handling and working near traffic or public areas. The policy applies to our gardening services in the wider service area without prescribing local statutory details.

Team conducting on-site risk assessment before workThe responsibilities within Gardener Hackbridge are allocated as follows: the directors are responsible for overall health and safety strategy and for ensuring policy implementation; supervisors and team leaders are responsible for on-site risk assessment, briefing and compliance; and each operative must work safely, use PPE correctly and report hazards promptly. Employees must cooperate in reporting incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions so that we can investigate and prevent recurrence.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Risk assessments will be recorded and reviewed periodically or when conditions change. Typical risks covered include the operation of lawnmowers, strimmers and power tools; pesticide and fertilizer handling; manual lifting of plant and materials; working at height for hedge cutting; and public safety when working on verges or driveways. We will develop written safe systems of work for higher risk activities and ensure they are communicated to staff before work begins.

Control measures will include vehicle and pedestrian segregation, the use of high-visibility clothing, noise protection, cut-resistant gloves, eye protection and suitable footwear. Mechanical guards, two-person lifting for heavy items and non-slip access methods will be implemented where necessary. We will ensure that equipment is inspected and maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and that defective tools are removed from service until repaired.

Operator wearing protective gear while using power toolsThe company maintains a permit-to-work style approach for specific operations that present higher risk. These include pesticide application, fuel handling, and electrical tool repairs. Where chemical use is necessary we adopt COSHH-style controls such as substitution with less hazardous products, provision of material safety data information to staff, and clear storage and disposal arrangements.

Training, Competence and Supervision

Gardener Hackbridge will ensure that all operatives receive appropriate induction, on-the-job training and refresher training relevant to their role. Training records will be maintained to demonstrate competence in tasks such as safe machinery operation, manual handling techniques and the correct use of PPE. Supervision ratios will be set to reflect the complexity and risk of the task.

New starters will be assessed for competence before unsupervised work is allowed. Contractors working on behalf of the company are required to confirm their own safety arrangements and must integrate with our site-based safety measures. Communication is supported by toolbox talks, hazard briefings and accessible written instructions.

First aid kit and incident reporting clipboard on siteIncident reporting and first aid arrangements are in place for all sites. All injuries, property damage and near misses will be recorded and investigated to identify root causes and corrective actions. First aid provisions and emergency arrangements will be appropriate to the type of work and the likely number of personnel on site, and staff will be made aware of these arrangements before work commences.

Workers taking a welfare break with water and shadeHealth and welfare considerations include measures to protect staff from heat and cold exposure, provision of drinking water, suitable rest breaks and facilities to change and store clothing. Staff with medical conditions that may affect safety are encouraged to disclose them to enable reasonable adjustments and task allocation that reduce risk.

Monitoring and review will be continuous: periodic site inspections, audits and consultation with staff will inform improvements. Performance indicators such as incident frequency, near-miss reports and completion of training will be used to measure the policy's effectiveness. The policy will be reviewed at least annually or following significant incidents, changes to operations, or new legislation.

Policy endorsement: This Health and Safety policy represents the commitment of Gardener Hackbridge to the wellbeing of its workforce, clients and the public. Everyone engaged by the company has a part to play in ensuring safe outcomes. By working together to identify hazards, apply sensible controls, and maintain competence, we will deliver gardening services across our service area to a high standard of safety and professionalism.
